My 4 year old daughter has been asking for a cowl or scarf to match a particular one of mine, and so I have made her one. In the process, I posted a couple photos, as you do, and had the usual questions about the stitch.

Wicker Stitch is also called Criss Cross Stitch, and I find it to be one of the more elegant looking stitches I can use in projects – it’s easy to work with distractions, like listening to a podcast. hanging out with friends on zoom, or watching your favorite show all the way through for the hundredth time this year. (Anyone else tired of the pandemic?) It’s also great for last minute projects or gifts.

There are a lot of available patterns for this stitch out there, but I do want to give you one little hint: If you want your cowl or scarf, or whatever to have any drape, you’ll need to use a needle considerably larger than what your yarn calls for. For this both my cowl/infinity scarf and my daughter’s, I used worsted weight yarn- and a size 15 needle. I believe I cast on somewhere in the realm of 49 for mine, and 25 for hers. Here is the basic pattern-
CO an odd number of stitches
Row 1 (RS): slip one, then, working two stitches at a time, KTBL of the second stitch on your needle, then come around and knit through the first stitch- then remove together. Continue on down your row.
Row2 (WS): slip one, then, purl through second stitch, then through first, and remove together.
Because this may be simpler with a little visual aid- here is one of my signature wonky videos-
